Ever have stress-related stomach aches? How many of you can relate to the fact that stress has a significant impact on the gut and that it can cause symptoms like heartburn, indigestion, bloating, gas, and abdominal discomfort”?
Stress can negatively affect the 3 main systems involved in the stress response; the Nervous, Immune, and Endocrine Systems. During persistent stress, the body develops an imbalance of the 3 systems (depletion of key neurotransmitters, hormones, cortisol as the main one, and increases in inflammatory mediators, among other things. This persistent stress and inflammation can start to show up in other body systems such as the gastrointestinal tract.
Antacids, H2 blockers, proton pump inhibitors, and many more prescription and OTC medications are frequently used to address some of these digestive issues. Even though these products frequently work wonders, they don't ultimately target all the symptoms you might be having and they don’t address the stress that is the original cause of the symptoms in the first place!
Oh, and there's also the matter of the gut microbiota (aka; microbiome) and the effects of stress to take into account.
One of the hottest subjects in health right now is the human gut microbiome and how it affects our health and all aspects of our existence. In recent years, it has become clear that your "gut flora" affect everything from your emotions and mental health to your blood glucose levels and weight control. Yet, there still is no clear agreement on what strains of probiotics, if any, could be given in a way to improve the microbiome.
So, to address the impact of stress on the gastrointestinal system, you would need to consider a product or products to target the symptoms you may be experiencing; bloating, indigestion, stomach discomfort, etc. Next you would need to consider something to support or maintain a healthy microbiome such as a product containing probiotics, prebiotics and even now, postbiotic products! That’s a lot of products and a lot of $$ and we haven’t even addressed the stress yet!
Factors to consider when choosing a digestive support supplement:
What about Probiotics? There is no clear consensus on which strains are the optimal ones to support a healthy microbiome. Many products tout that they contain 5, 10, even 15 different strains at 50-100 billion CFUs! According to Microbiome Labs Founder, Kiran Krishnan, this shotgun approach of “more is better” is more marketing hype and just isn’t rooted in science and you are likely wasting your money. Studies conducted by Microbiome Labs, have found that ~98% of probiotic products tested, didn’t have near the amount of CFUs on the label and some didn’t even contain the strains listed!
Everybody’s microbiome is unique, like a fingerprint. Therefore, there really isn’t a “one-size fits all” solution when considering and probiotic. What may work for one person, may not work for others – so how do you choose? I will discuss in subsequent blog article.
What about Prebiotics? Increasingly, diet is recognized as a key environmental factor that affects the gastrointestinal microbiota. consumption of specific dietary ingredients, such as fiber (a prebiotic), is an avenue by which the microbiota can be affected.
Perhaps a better approach for a healthy microbiome, is to deliver the proper “food” to feed the bacteria already in your gut. As mentioned, bacteria in the microbiome will digest certain substances to produce beneficial products for your microbiome, given that you feed it healthy “food”!
These “food” ingredients are referred to as “Prebiotic” ingredients. Prebiotics are defined as “selectively fermented ingredients that result in specific changes, in the composition and/or activity of the microbiome, thus benefit(s) in health . Examples of these are fiber and other ingredients such as functional mushrooms that contain beta glucans, which provide an excellent source of prebiotic fuel for your microbiome. These products the bacteria make which help maintain a healthy gut lining are referred to as: Postbiotics-> in the digestive track: prebiotic food => fermented by bacteria => postbiotics.
So, now what do you choose? Well there is good news to make things a whole lot easier, there’s a new 2023 breakthrough product that not only helps reduce those nagging and sometimes embarrassing gastrointestinal symptoms including; heartburn, indigestion, bloating, gas, and abdominal discomfort while supporting growth of a healthy microbiome, it also targets the root cause - Stress!
