Ever have stress-related stomach aches? How many of you can relate to the fact that stress has a significant impact on the gut and that it can cause symptoms like heartburn, indigestion, bloating, gas, and abdominal discomfort”?

Stress can negatively affect the 3 main systems involved in the stress response; the Nervous, Immune, and Endocrine Systems. During persistent stress, the body develops an imbalance of the 3 systems (depletion of key neurotransmitters, hormones, cortisol as the main one, and increases in inflammatory mediators, among other things. This persistent stress and inflammation can start to show up in other body systems such as the gastrointestinal tract.  

Antacids, H2 blockers, proton pump inhibitors, and many more prescription and OTC medications are frequently used to address some of these digestive issues. Even though these products frequently work wonders, they don't ultimately target all the symptoms you might be having and they don’t address the stress that is the original cause of the symptoms in the first place!

Oh, and there's also the matter of the gut microbiota (aka; microbiome) and the effects of stress to take into account.

One of the hottest subjects in health right now is the human gut microbiome and how it affects our health and all aspects of our existence. In recent years, it has become clear that your "gut flora" affect everything from your emotions and mental health to your blood glucose levels and weight control. What about Prebiotics?  Increasingly, diet is recognized as a key environmental factor that affects the gastrointestinal microbiota. consumption of specific dietary ingredients, such as fiber (a prebiotic), is an avenue by which the microbiota can be affected.

Perhaps a better approach for a healthy microbiome, is to deliver the proper “food” to feed the bacteria already in your gut. As mentioned, bacteria in the microbiome will digest certain substances to produce beneficial products for your microbiome, given that you feed it healthy “food”!

These “food” ingredients are referred to as “Prebiotic” ingredients.
