What is L-Theanine?

L-Theanine is an amino acid that is not essential for human function, and it is not naturally produced by our bodies. This means that while it can interact with our natural processes and does promote certain pathways responsible for stress support, mental wellness, and other benefits, it isn’t one of the 20 amino acids necessary for us to live.

How Does L-Theanine Provide Stress Support?

Green teas have long been held to have soothing effects that can help support focus and mental acuity without jitteriness. While the taste and aroma of most green teas is soothing, it is thought that the main reason behind the benefits is due to L-theanine’s effect on a certain set of receptors in our central nervous system.

The central nervous system is a vast and complex system, and it has two main kinds of receptors that largely help control our state of being when it comes to being relaxed or excited. These receptors are GABA receptors and glutamate receptors.

When GABA receptors are interacted with, or activated, this triggers pathways that lead to relaxing, calming effects. These are the pathways that are responsible for the relief of tension throughout the body. 

When glutamate receptors are activated, this leads to pathways that develop excitement and alertness and promote more active states of being.

Even though GABA receptors are associated with the calm and unwind pathways in our minds, L-theanine actually doesn’t interact with the receptors themselves, nevertheless,  it complements other natural adaptogens supporting the same results. 

What Else Can L-Theanine Be Used For?

L-Theanine is commonly found in supplements that aid in stress support, focus, and calming. It has been known to help with relieving restlessness and promoting body and mind wellness.

In green tea, L-theanine can be prepared in many ways from traditional loose leaf hot tea, to iced and sweetened with honey, or ground and prepared into hot or iced matcha. As a dietary supplement, it can be consumed in capsule form and even mixed with other natural herbs to help enhance its soothing effects.

Average Dosing and Side Effects

There is no current literature on dosing guidelines for L-theanine. It is generally thought that guidelines surrounding caffeine should be used when ingesting L-theanine. Overuse of L-theanine could lead to feelings of nausea or discomfort just like in the case of caffeine, and it should be avoided if a known allergy to green tea leaves exists.
